We have begun the process of pouring the paint on Spire. We started with the roof and will work our way down to the basement. As you can see, we are using a clear paint that will reflect the light throughout the entire sculpture.
Florian has rigged special tools to facilitate the pouring process.
The tip, middle and basement of Spire have now been covered with mesh. Next step, paint!
Florian and I have been working to install the mesh on the roof.
My friend, Florian Altenburg, has joined me in Grand Rapids to complete the installation of Spire. This is the second project he has assisted me with after being an instrumental part of the installation of Allotropisms, 2011.
We have begun installing the mesh on the second and third elevations.
We begin installing the mesh today!
As I mentioned in July, Tom Wagner is making a documentary film about ArtPrize entitled, Art is the Prize. Here is a snippet of the film that features me in New York City.
Spire will be 13 feet tall from the upper side of the skylight, making the total height of the installation 65 feet from the basement. The tip will be visible from several street corners in downtown Grand Rapids. Paul Amenta, Bob Rogers and I are using rope to draw the shape as we start construction today.
As you know, I live in New York City and so for these past four weeks while constructing Spire in Grand Rapids, I have been away from my wife, Florencia. She flew out to Grand Rapids to check out the progress I have been making and to celebrate my birthday. I could not have asked for more.
